Hi.

I'm installing my LV8.5.1 from DVD today on my development computer with LV8.5 already installed.  I got an error on step 30 of 42.  The pop-up message says "Error 1921.  Service "NI Configuration Manager" (mxssvr) could not be stopped.  Verify that you have sufficient priveledges to stop system services." with Retry and Cancel options.

I'm the administrator for this PC and therefore clicked Retry.  I got the message again, so clicked Cancel.  So now installation has continued without the configuration manager.  Does anyone know why I got this and what I should do now?

Jeff.

Hi Jeff,
Were any National Instruments programs open when you installed LabVIEW 8.5.1?  Is NI Configuration Manager running currently?  You can check the status under Control Panel » Administrative Tools » Services » NI Configuration Manager.  Do LabVIEW and Measurement & Automation Explorer seem to be working properly?  If not, you can repair the software through Add or Remove Programs.  If you receive the same error, I would suggest taking the following steps to stop the Configuration Manager:

- Select Run... from the Windows Start menu.
- Type "cmd", and click OK.
- Type "net stop mxssvr" and press Enter to stop the MAX database service. If you are prompted to stop other services, stop them.
- Type "exit" and press Enter to close the command window.

Thanks for the help Jennifer.
Here are the answers to your questions:
1.) No NI programs were open when I installed, and I hadn't been running any prior to the installation.
2.) At the time of the error, the configuration manager had a status of "stopping" when viewed using the Control Panel » Administrative Tools » Services.
3.) LabVIEW and MAX seem to be working properly now.
Shortly after posting my message, I had to install the Device Drivers.  This process attempted to update MAX again, so I got the same error.  This time I viewed the properties of the configuration manager service using the Control Panel » Administrative Tools » Services tool by right clicking on the "NI Configuration Manager" Name in the services list and selecting "Properties".  From there I saw that the configuration manger service is executed from "C:\Program Files\National Instruments\MAX\nimxs.exe".  I then launched the Windows Task Manager (ctl+alt+delete) and selected the "Processes" tab, clicked on the "Image Name" column header to sort the processes alphabetically, clicked on the row whose image name was "nimxs.exe" to select it, then clicked the "End Process" button to terminate the configuraiton manager.
I then returned to the NI Device Drivers Installer and clicked the Retry button.  Installation proceeded without error from that point forward.
I'm not sure that following your instructions would have worked since the configuration manager was stuck in the "stopping" state.  So if anyone else has this problem, they may try using my method if yours doesn't work first.
Thanks again for your help.

I installed the 8.5.1. NI update yesterday and cannot get the desktop to show on the computer unless I start it in Safe Mode.  The anti-virus program is turned off and will not run, so I got online and ran a free antivirus from Symantec and it found nothing.
I don't know where to go from here.
Please help.
